Last Rites Today For Drowned West Lake Boy
Final rites were to be held today for Harold Owen Conrad, 14-year-old West Lake high school student,
who was drowned in Calcasieu river at Hecker, about 25 miles northeast of Lake Charles, yesterday afternoon.
Calcasieu Deputy Sheriff S. C. Mazilly said the youth apparently fell into the water after
stricken with an attack to which relatives said he was subject.
The body is at the Hixson funeral home where services were scheduled for 2 p.m. with the Rev. Pratt McLeod and the Rev. E. C. Harris, Baptist ministers of West Lake, officiating.
Burial was to be in Goosport.
According to the deputy's report:
The boy drowned shortly after he and his father, W. A. Conrad of Lest Lake, had returned from a fishing trip and docked at the Walter Goos camp at about 12:30 p.m.
The youth stayed on the bank to skin their catch while his father went up to the camp. On Mr. Conrad's return, his son was gone.
The sheriff's department was notified and grappling operations were begun immediately.
The boy's body was found at about 2:30 p.m. approximately 15 feet offshore.
Besides his parents survivors include two brothers, Alvin and Leslie of West Lake, and his grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Conrad of Houston, Texas. |
