In March
of 1897 the Rev. Cornelius Van de Ven, the pastor of
Immaculate Conception Parish in Lake Charles, launched the
first Catholic newspaper in Southwest Louisiana, called "The
Catholic Calendar." It was a monthly newspaper, and was
certainly the first Catholic paper west of the Mermentau, and
most probably the first west of the Atchafalaya.
DEATHS
December 1, 1899 ...The little
boy of Mr. and Mrs. Jessen, of St. John's Island, died on the
25th, and was buried in this city the next day.
